Backstage at the BET Awards: Los Angeles, One Long Night

The BET Awards in Los Angeles are less an event than a mood. This year the mood was recalibration.

I spent the night moving between the carpet, the press pen and three green rooms that never appear on the broadcast. What I heard, over and over, from artists, publicists and one veteran executive holding a rapidly-warming glass of champagne, is that the black entertainment economy is done pretending its business model still works.

There is a new argument being made — quietly, in hallways — that ownership of catalogue, of image, of narrative, matters more than any single award. The trophies still glitter. But the conversations behind them have moved.

This is a dispatch about that shift, told through the six people I spoke to longest.
